Nick launches re-election campaign

March 30, 2015 2:40 PM

Nick Harvey has today launched his re-election campaign for the General Election on 7th May 2015.

Speaking today, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for North Devon said:

"I'm pleased today to have fired the 'starting gun' on my campaign to continue my work as North Devon's MP for the next five years. I look forward to speaking to local people across the constituency over the next six weeks about the issues that really matter to them at this election.

"The economy and public service provision will feature highly this time around. All the major parties are committed to tackling the remaining deficit - albeit on different timelines - but who can be trusted to do this in a fair way is the critical issue.

"The Tories would shrink the state even further, proposing another round of austerity that includes £12billion of unspecified and dangerous cuts to the welfare budget: far from asking the wealthiest in society to shoulder their fair share of the burden. In North Devon the local NHS commissioning group is under huge financial pressure and Tory Devon County Council has made drastic cuts to day care centres, residential homes and road maintenance. After another five-year battering to public services, what would be left?

"Labour's economic plans don't add up - they have failed to confront reality when it comes to the nation's finances. The Lib Dems are the only party offering a reasoned alternative, who can be trusted to build on this country's economic recovery and do so in a fair way while protecting public services.

"North Devon needs an experienced Liberal Democrat voice with solid roots in our community and connections across the political divide to stand up for everyone - rural or urban, rich or poor. In recent years we have achieved much: winning back economic grants for North Devon, securing millions for our local schools, a vast expansion of apprenticeships and getting improvements to the North Devon Link Road onto the table. But there is much more to be done - and I intend to fight hard for upgrades to road and rail links, access to faster broadband and support for local businesses as committed local campaigner. Let's get on with the job at hand."

Launching the District, Town and Parish election campaigns, Lib Dem Council Leader Brian Greenslade said:

"The upcoming election on May 7th is not just about Westminster - there will be District and Town and Parish elections as well.

"Among the achievements of the last four years have been the freezing of the North Devon share of Council tax for five years, the freezing of most fees and charges including hourly paid car parking fees for four years, and Councillors' allowances for six years. We believe we have a record of delivering for North Devon and the energy and ideas to take this area forward, despite the cuts in central government grant we have suffered."
