LD DCC Election Manifesto1b

Six to fix for Devon

  • Fix the potholes, unblock the drains, bring back regular maintenance.

  • Back jobs with a 'Made in Devon' campaign promoting buying locally from our local businesses, traders and

  • Bring care services back under council control and open new council-run care homes.

  • Listen to local residents and No more 'County Hall knows best'.

  • Launch 'Green Devon' - create green jobs, invest in making Devon carbon neutral and protect our beautiful

  • Invest in our children - fix our failing Children's Services, support young people's mental health services and campaign for fair funding for Devon's

Liberal Democrats have a vision for Devon which prioritises you and your community - not County Hall. This is our ambition and aspiration for Devon. We know there is a lot of work to do to put Devon back on its feet and recover from the Covid pandemic. We are ready to build a stronger, greener and more caring county.

On Thursday 6 May, the people of Devon have a real opportunity to shake off the tired Conservative administration at County Hall, which has run Devon for 12 years.

Our roads need fixing, Children's Services have been labelled inadequate by Ofsted and under the Government's watch, youth services have been cut and care homes closed and sold off. The Liberal Democrats will invest in improving our roads, filling the potholes and keeping them fit for purpose.

We will back businesses across Devon through a new economic support fund to promote and celebrate the great products 'Made in Devon' and encourage residents and businesses to buy local.

We will strive for a 'Green Devon', doing more to tackle climate change and protect our environment. We will keep council owned farms, not sell them off. Together, we can turn the page and secure a fresh start for Devon.

You can be part of that fresh start by voting Liberal Democrat on Thursday 6 May.

Thank you.

Alan Connett

Leader, Devon Liberal Democrats

How the Liberal Democrats would run Devon differently

Devon has been run in the same tired way for the past 12 years by the Conservatives.

It's time for change. Liberal Democrats believe in doing things differently:

  • Devon County Council should be there to support you and your community, not expecting you to support the County Council!
  • We will work with local communities, listening and bringing together our joint resources to put Devon on the road again after the trauma we have all experienced during the pandemic.
  • We will be open and transparent and end the Conservative 'closed shop' decision making.
  • We want a positive vision for Devon embracing the best ideas, wherever they come from.
  • We will work with communities, local councils and other organisations to ensure that consultation is real and meaningful.
  • The Conservative administration at County Hall has lost its If Devon is to have a fresh start, only the Liberal Democrats offer that drive, ambition and aspiration.

A sustainable economy for Devon

A new green economic recovery will help us recover from the impact of the pandemic. We will prioritise sustainable and active travel, help boost our town centres, invest in renewable energy and help to protect existing green jobs and create new ones as well. Devon needs an effective council to spearhead this economic recovery.

The Liberal Democrats want to put Devon back on its feet, building a new look, sustainable economy. We will:

  • Support Devon's small businesses, including offering training to help businesses get online.
  • Improve Devon's public transport network helping people travel around the county.
  • Keep the Council-owned farms because we want young and aspiring farmers to get their start in agriculture. A Liberal Democrat council will not sell off council farms.
  • Support farms in adopting environmentally sustainable practices.
  • Support our tourism industry through the post-Covid world.
  • Work with others to attract investment into Devon.
  • Do all we can to improve broadband and mobile phone coverage across Devon, to help keep Devon connected.

Leaving no-one behind

The Liberal Democrats passionately believe that Devon County Council has to work to make sure no one is left behind. Devon needs councillors who will ensure that everyone has the opportunity to reach their potential and contribute to keeping Devon a wonderful place to live and work.

We will:

  • Fight for equal funding for education in Devon. We get around £300 less per pupil in Devon, it is not good enough.
  • End the 7 years of failure in Devon Children's Services and make them fit for purpose for our children.
  • Bring care services back under council control and open new council-run care homes.
  • Offer better advice and support to carers working in Devon, especially young carers.
  • Create local services so we can stop sending children miles away from Devon when placed into council care
  • Push for more investment in young people's mental health services to cut waiting times and give young people the support they really need
  • Immediately launch a £750,000 fund for counselling and mental health support for children and young people coping with the lasting impact of lockdown.

A Devon fit for the future

The Liberal Democrats want to see a Devon which is fit for the brilliant future we all want. This means the council must rise to the challenge of the climate and environmental emergencies, the housing crisis and fixing the state of Devon's roads. The Liberal Democrats stand ready to rise to that challenge. We will

  • Invest in continued efforts to make Devon County Council carbon neutral by 2030.
  • Fill the potholes and fix them better.
  • Tackle the legacy problems from underspending on highways drainage.
  • Lobby to ensure all new houses are built to the best green standards possible and support an energy audit programme to help make existing homes and businesses more energy efficient.
  • Work with and support local communities who want traffic changes, like locally agreed 20mph limits and flashing speed signs.
  • Invest in charging points across Devon for electric vehicles, and support clean energy generation.
  • Use surplus council land to create affordable homes for local people to buy, to rent and to run.
  • Campaign against Government plans stopping democratic local decision-making on planning and development matters.

How will we pay for it?

We will champion Devon's case for fair funding from Government for schools, roads and vital care services.

We will launch a root and branch review of ALL council spending.

We will make better use of the money Devon County Council already has, so that we will be able to cut out waste and use the money saved to fund important priorities that serve you, our residents and communities.
